The purpose of the present essay is not to elaborate upon relevant applications of those three meanings, a topic that has been treated in numerous books and essays already. Rather, I shall provide a brief history of the term cura personalis, and point to some early Jesuit sources that can enrich our understanding of it. In the process, some potential misapplications of the term will also come.

Cura Personalis (Care for the Person) The Catholic, Jesuit concept of Cura Personalis, which translates as care of the whole person, suggests individualized attention to the needs of others, distinct respect for unique circumstances and concerns and an appropriate appreciation for singular gifts and insights. Care of the self is integral to the desire to practice cura personalis. This summer, perhaps it is time to return to the springs of living water that are the Scriptures and the Church’s liturgy. To use a different approach, consider how care of the self can include such disparate activities as taking long naps, reading a challenging essay, physical exercise, foreign travel, walks in nature.
