Inductive and Deductive Agruments Essay Sample.
A deductive argument may be valid or invalid, sound or unsound. A deductive argument is valid if the conclusion necessarily follows from the premises and invalid if otherwise. On the other hand, if the premises of the argument are true, then the argument is sound; it is unsound if otherwise.
Inductive arguments are used when one wishes to present an argument, but does not, or in some cases cannot, evince a necessary connection between the premises and the conclusion. This happens very often in scientific fields in which correlations between phenomena are observed, but causation cannot be definitively established.
A valid deductive argument with true premises is said to be sound, whereas, a deductive argument which is invalid or has one or more false premises or both, is said to be unsound. An argument is valid when both the premises are true and the conclusion that is derived from them cannot be false. Examples of Deductive Reasoning.
If the author of the argument has no doubt that the truth of the assumption establishes the truth of the conclusion, then the case is deductive and vice versa (IEP, 2003). A formal argument may be set up so that, on its face, it looks logical. However, no matter how well-constructed the argument is, the premises must be true or any inferences based on the premises will be unsound. Inductive reasoning often stands behind the premises in a deductive argument.
The argument could have a false premise and be invalid. Look carefully at table 1.1 on page 46 of your text. There, Hurley gives you examples of every kind of unsound argument.
